Quick Update

Hope you had a very merry christmas
and wishing you all the best for 2011!

Getting tired if this cold weather, seems as though everything is at a standstill.

And so another season begins...

Curly, Merlin and Clear have all had a well deserved break, time to get them back into shape. First things first a quick check up with the vet then off we go. I'll be heading up to Belfast this time next week to "see a man about a horse".. then hopefully plan to drive the car over from london to waterford. 7 weeks to get them in fighting form in time for the Toscana jumping tour in Follonica (first 3 weeks in march), then I think we'll stay jumping in Italy until the end of May.

18th of Jan big meeting with the new swedish Chef d'Equipe. keep you posted..

OFF WE GO AGAIN

Back again... but only for a short while.

Had a great tour in Italy, aside from half the shows being cancelled.. I got so desperate at one stage we actually packed up the lorry and headed all the way up to Belgium. Might avoid that next year, although i say that every year.

Curly (aka Heracross) and Merlin had quite a few placings between them in the ranking classes in Pinerolo, LaBagnaia and San Giovanni. Clear CC played her part in Pinerolo, Moorsele and San Giovanni, so i couldn't be happier with them! My Camera seems to be permanently out of action (I won't name names) so no videos this time unfortunately. Managed to climb 30 places on the FEI ranking list so things are slowly but surely looking up.

Spent last weekend in Cavan, Ireland, great atmosphere there, and a good time to shake off the cobwebs before the next trip. The horses had to leave sunday morning though on account of a terrible weather forecast... no surprise there... so they are steadily making their way down to Montpellier.
Back in London now till Thursday, and then it begins:
  • 11 - 14/11: CSI3 Montpellier
  • 18 - 21/11: CSI3 Wieze
  • 02 - 05/12: CSI4 Salzburg (hopefully: waiting on confirmation)
Very excited about this actually, would love to end the year with a bang!

Freedom of Speech

Remember the protests in London at the time of the G20 meeting of world leaders (April 2009)? In a word: Controversial. The Royal Bank of Scotland became the symbolic target of Anti-Capitalist demonstraters. What started off as a peaceful demonstration escalated into sporadic outbursts of violence as protestors were angered by police tactics. There was a growing sense of frustration amongst those fenced in to a particular area, and as some threw plastic bottles in retaliation, the police force pushed back against the crowd aggressively.

A multitude of video recordings give evidence of officers' unacceptable use of force, including an attack that caused the death of Ian Thompson; posing serious questions toward police conduct. One's right to protest is central to any democratic society. Much of the freedom we take for granted was obtained by those prepared to take to the streets in protest. In fact the Human Rights Act entitles us to do so. The increased threat of terrorism and anti-social behaviour, in recent years, has led to new legislation wherein the police are given wider powers to control and restrict the actions of protestors.

The main police watchdog has warned against aggressive tactics, reviewing protocol and thereby the service's approach to public order policing since the G20 protests. The report argues that there is an "absence of clear standards on when to use force, inconsistent tactics and lack of up-to-date training" (Financial times).

Reform does seem underway as a result of this report. Meredydd Hughes, chief constable of South yorkshire police and a spokesperson for ACPO (association of chief police officers), stated that they "intend to make guidelines a public document and ensure the British reputation for fair and open policing is reinvigorated by the response to this report" (Financial Times). Emphasizing the concept that it is not only one's right, but one's obligation to question generally accepted government policy. That any one person can make a difference.

And so it should be.

To Fly or not to Fly..

I'm what you might call a "frequent flyer". And that's putting it mildly. These last few months i've been boarding planes like average Joe gets the bus... What troubles me is that rather than feel more at ease with the whole concept of floating in mid-air: the more airmiles I collect, the more vivid the reality that accidents do happen.

For instance, in the past three months alone, two pilots failed to land the plane the first time around. I can't remember the technical term for it, but in a nutshell, just before the wheels hit the tarmac, the plane takes off again. The deafening silence that follows is what gets me. Is an immediate announcement really too much to ask? It would certainly spare me the 15mins of anguish, "flash forwards" and "worst case" scenarios...

The first time (once grounded), the pilot apologized for the "incident" revealing that he was too close to another plane. Why was it only apparent in the last minute? Isn't there a control tower in the vicinity paying attention?

The second time happened just a couple of hours ago on an Aerlingus flight back from Cork. Once again i was grinding my teeth trying to preempt the inevitable whip lash experience of most landings, when a sudden jolt was followed by a re-escalation into the night. It all feels very dramatic at the time and once again, silence ensues... This time there was a change in wind which made it too dangerous to land, consequently they closed that particular runway. The fact that this all happened in the last minute, I find slightly disturbing: obviously there is no way of anticipating such a slight change of circumstance... And God knows you can't trust the weather channel...

I used to only worry at take offs and landings. Lately i find myself superstitious over things I say before the flight and during. Even certain thoughts are off limits. Two weeks ago, on my way back from Cannes, this boy queuing behind me (boarding group B as always, no matter what time i get there!) was going on and on about how "you have more chance of dying in a car crash than on a plane". And all I could think was: "famous last words....".

My worst experience was on an Aerarann flight from Luton to Waterford; one of those mini propellor planes (whatever they're called). Two thirds of the way through, the pilot announced our return to Luton. There was a malfunction with the wheels: he didn't know if they were out or in, or just partially out. Luton was better equipped to deal with a potential crash. Needless to say, i was petrified and in total ignorance asked (nobody in particular) "how can they not know if the wheels are fully out?". thank God for the englishman beside me who said in a heavy East London dialect: "Well what's he gonna do?... look out the bloody window?". At least that turned my fear into hysteria, and the landing sequence went by in a breeze.

I hope i haven't created an epidemic of aviatophobia, but they say its best to share your fears... To be honest though, I'd be happy just to pass mine on...

What frightens you?

Quote of the Day: Pablo Picasso

"We artists are indestructible.
Even in a prison cell or a concentration camp,
I would be almighty in my own world of art.
Even if i had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell."
